At age 19, just a college sophomore, Jack Nicklaus consolidated national attention when he won the 1959 United States Amateur. Two years later, in 1961, he achieved the pinnacle of amateur success by winning both the U.S. Amateur as well as the NCAA title.
Over the years, the vast majority of successful amateur golfers have crumbled under the �bright lights� of the professional circuit. Such was not to be the case with Jack Nicklaus, featuring raw power; he was easily the longest hitter in the game when he turned professional in 1962. This earned him the nickname �The Golden Bear.� A very serious student of the game, Nicklaus subsequently concentrated heavily on his short irons and putting, leading to exceptionally well-rounded, consistent golf.
